5 tips to follow before setting off on a surftrip

It’s cold, it feels like winter’s going to set in for good, and you’re not at all motivated to get out on the water in this climate. The thought of putting on your slippers, gloves, balaclava and 4X3 suit just makes you want to curl up under your comforter and dream of a warmer surfing destination! We know what you mean! But before you set off on your surftrip, especially if you’re a beginner surfer, there are a few essential tips you need to follow to have the best surf travel of your life!

Choosing the destination: Do I have the level? Is it the right surfing season? What if it’s flat?

The choice of destination is the most important thing to consider when going on a surftrip, but don’t get it wrong! Here are our tips for choosing your surfing destination:

  • Your budget
  • Your surfing level
  • When you want to go surfing
  • If you like discovering the country, take a look at what there is to do if it’s flat?

Airline tickets: Anticipate your purchases and be flexible

Choosing a flight to go surfing is always a headache! Which airline should I choose? When do I leave and when do I return? We consult a whole host of sites to find the cheapest! So here’s our advice:

  • Plan your purchases between 2 and 6 months before departure
  • Be flexible: tickets are often cheaper if you depart and return during the week.
  • Book your flight on Tuesday
  • Switch to private browsing for your searches
  • Use a flight comparator
  • Study the terms and conditions carefully to avoid any surprises a few days before departure.

Surfcamp? Roadtrip? Or in a 5-star hotel?

Here again, it’s all a question of budget and desire! Either you’re in the mood for adventure, waking up on a different spot every day, and you opt to rent a van or caravan. Or you want to meet new people and share good times with a community of surfers, and you opt for a surfcamp. Or you want to enjoy the all-inclusive pool and jacuzzi while surfing from time to time, and opt for a 5-star hotel by the beach.

Choosing the right people: friends first

An important point! Who am I going on this surftrip with? On my own? My boyfriend/girlfriend? My mom? My 15 buddies? Only you can answer that question, but it’s not one to be ignored!

Travel light: pack well

Once you’ve chosen your surf destination, booked your plane ticket, decided how you’re going to travel and got your buddies on board, all that’s left to do is pack your bag! And we know that for some, this can be a real headache! So follow this simple advice: BRING ONLY THE ESSENTIALS! Traveling light is essential, especially if you’ve opted for a cross-country road trip.
